Dresden opens out

If you know Dresden mainly from Theaterplatz and Neumarkt, the east offers a different view. The Elbe becomes more prominent, with slopes, villas and green spaces shaping the surroundings. Here, the pleasure is less about ticking off buildings quickly and more about noticing the landscape as part of the city.

The Elbe castles provide a good reason for this change of perspective. They can be viewed from different angles. Access and possible interior visits are part of planning a specific visit.

Loschwitz and the Blue Wonder

The Blue Wonder bridge connects Loschwitz and Blasewitz. Around it, the river, transport and the history of two neighbourhoods come together. Look beyond the bridge as a photographic subject and take in its setting too.

Loschwitz has a different scale from the Old Town. Hillside paths, former village structures and villas tell stories of Dresden’s development. Walking distances matter here: a riverside route is a different experience from one that climbs the slopes.

These places aren’t all neighbours

The Elbe castles, Loschwitz, Weißer Hirsch and Pillnitz fit together thematically, but they don’t form one compact circuit. Choose a focus for a relaxed outing or plan suitable journeys between stops.

Public transport, a boat journey or your own vehicle may suit your plans. Check connections, journey times and tickets for the actual date. A guided tour alone doesn’t replace arranging transport.

Your pace matters

A view of the castles and a walk around Loschwitz may be just right. You may prefer to spend longer in the east. Either can make a lovely visit if the route suits your group, the weather and available time.

On my tour of Dresden’s east, we discuss these points beforehand, leaving space to enjoy the landscape and the stories connecting it to the city.
